What we know about VIZAG Gas Tragedy so far..

It was  3 a.m in the clock, it was a peaceful village, everybody is having a sound sleep in their homes.. As this is summer, all the windows are kept open for fresh air to breathe..Suddenly an odorless gas started spreading the village..No one had noticed earlier..Some of the old aged people and kids felt tough to breathe easy..They opened their main doors so that they can breathe easier and suffocation will be ended..But, as soon as they opened the doors they saw, huge gas had spread around the village.. Immediately they started informing each other in the village about gas leakage..Soon everyone started running outside the village to save their lives..But it was too late..The leaked gas had already started working on them.. They are not even able to walk..Some of them had laid down unconsciously..As soon as the government officials got to know this, they have rushed to spot soon..

Insider :
There was a chemical factory approximately 2kiolmeters far from the village.. As soon as the government stated about the lockdown, this factory was closed immediately.. This plant was re-opened today for the first time since INDIA went lockdown..This chemical factory used to manufacture plastic materials like CD & DVD cases, lids, trays, disposable material, etc..In this manufacturing process a polymer is used, known as "polystyrene." Polystyrene is a kind of plastic that can be mold (or) bent easily when exposed to higher temperatures and solidifies upon cooling.. There will be several processes involved in this..Finally, the styrene which is left over is to be removed by evaporating under vacuum in two stages, only then these polymers are ready to use..

Leakage Stunt:
We do not know exactly how the leakage had started, but this styrene gas was leaking from the plant. It lasts a long time in the natural environment. It can easily dissolve when contacted with hydrocarbon (or) chlorinated substances..It acts like a slow poison in the body.. Health effects include irritation of eyes, skin, difficulty in breathing, vomiting, unconsciousness, etcc..Long exposure leads to cancer..

Things to be done:
  • Drink plenty of water
  • Wear mask (or) wet cloth even if at home
  • Use eye drops for eye irritation
  • Take milk, banana, jaggery to neutralize the effect of gas
  • Stay at home, do not go out for the next 48 hours
  • If the symptoms are heavy, immediately rush to the hospital nearby.
Its really a tough time running for vizagities now.. All the government officials are monitoring this issue and taking certain primary measures.. According to the latest news around 100 people had recovered from the respiratory issues.. Measures to be taken in such a way that this kind of issue should never be repeated again, people should relocate to some places for a few days till everything comes under control.. I hope people who are residing near Gopalapatnam should reach there and help the needy, rush them to hospitals & save their lives.. Hoping this 20-20 game would end soon..Youngsters interested in the subject Chemistry can choose their career in "CHEMICAL ENGINEERING" and can end such type mistakes with their capability..
