It started with COVID, then bush fires, sandstorms, gas leakages, cyclones, earthquakes & many more twists ahead to witness..It seemed nature was seriously implementing its revenge on humans..Many of us are happy because of the good food reaching our plate and this is purely the effort of farmers.. Imagine a day(or) at least half a day with no food..How horrible..!! This is what going to happen ahead.. Now, nature got re-shaped and started strengthening its play in the form of locusts..Let us know about them much better in a brief manner..
LOCUSTS :
These are the large grasshoppers that are mainly found in the high degree temperatures with strong flight powers. These migrate from one place to another in swarms and destroy the vegetation..
The effect of locusts is very common in the desert area of Rajasthan & Gujarat..Due to the high temperatures, they find comfort to breed each other and increases their number as much as they can..We cannot stop these locusts once the number is increased.. Locusts can travel around 135 to 150 kilometers per day.. With the same speed, they had now reached Delhi and Uttarpradesh.. We find this issue to be silly but the surprising fact about this is "A group of locusts can consume as much as the food that 10 elephants, 25 camels (or) 2500 human beings consume in a day.."
If the same situation is to be continued they are capable of migrating to all the states of India and we remain in the food crisis too.. This added a bitter flavor to our lives now.. Is this the first time to happen..? Can't we kill them.? What would be the perfect counter to this.?
This is not the first time to happen in India, but it was more severe this time.. In the previous years, when technology was absent, nature had its best solution to encounter this problem..The solution was "Birds".. Birds used to eat these locusts as their food and save our fields from damage..Now, due to the high radiation effect birds lose their lives and so the damage now is exceeding severely on a daily basis..
Soon as time passed by and with the invention of technology, we have created an insecticide to kill these insects..Of course, this insecticide is more powerful and affects the environment in a severe way..Soon it was banned in India..
So, the birds cannot be brought back, the banned insecticide cannot be used now..We are left with some preventive and counter measures right now..
Firstly, farmers should be on high alert about locusts.. Once they notice locusts in small groups then the things farmers need to do are
- light up the fencing with fires so that when this swarm reaches the fencing, they die easily..
- Making huge, terrifying sounds to threaten the locusts and so they leave the place with panic..
- Spraying the basic insecticide in the crop, but this may take 10 to 15 days to destroy totally..
- Mixing the sand with water in certain proportions and spraying them on the crop..Applying the mud heavily on certain parts of trees/plants like roots, trunk, etc..
We waste the food for every single reason..But there exists a great effort in crop cultivation, crop protection, and selling the crop behind a heartful meal.. The value of food can be known only when you start cultivating crops (or) when you feel hungry.. Whatever the reason may be let us make a healthy habit of not wasting the food and if possible let us feed the needy too.. There is huge destruction till now and let us hope these locusts go away and vegetation is available to all categories of people..Let us learn to sync our lives with nature rather than destroying it..
